You Are The Blue Sky

Recently we visited Hocking Hills, Ohio where the very deep blue skies held brilliant white puffs of clouds that reflected the sun like an artful masterpiece. As we move deeper into spring, the sky becomes a living metaphor—one moment bright and open, the next filled with shifting clouds, wind, or sudden storms. It’s unpredictable, dynamic, and constantly changing. In many ways, so are we.

In yoga, there’s a simple but powerful idea: you are not the clouds, you are the blue sky behind them.

Your thoughts, emotions, and life events are like clouds. They move in, take shape, sometimes darken, sometimes soften, and eventually… pass. But beneath all of the fluctuation there is a steady, open awareness that remains unchanged, your true self. Your “blue sky.”

So often, we forget this. A thought arises of I’m not good enough. A feeling follows of stress, frustration, sadness. An event happens and suddenly, we’re fully inside the storm, identifying with it, believing it defines us. What if instead of treating every thought, emotion and happening like truth, we saw it for what it really is? Just a cloud. Not solid. Not permanent. Not the sky itself.

When we label something as a fixed conclusion, we give it weight. We let it anchor into our identity. But when we soften that grip and say, this is just a passing thought… a shifting cloud of perception, something changes. There’s space. There’s breath. There’s choice.

This is where yoga becomes more than movement, it becomes a practice of remembering. Through breath, movement, and mindfulness we begin to remember: I can experience this without becoming it.

Even the darker clouds ... the heavy emotions, the difficult seasons, the unexpected events ... are not here to stay. They may linger longer, they may feel more intense, but they are still part of the same ever-changing sky. Just like in nature, clouds aren’t always something to shun. Clouds can be beautiful and works of art. Clouds can soften the light, create depth, invite imagination. If you’ve ever laid on your back and watched the sky, you know how clouds can transform into shapes, stories, possibilities. The same is true for your inner world.

What if your thoughts weren’t problems to solve, but shapes to observe? What if your emotions weren’t obstacles, but movements of energy asking to be felt and released?

As spring unfolds with its shifting temperatures, its unexpected storms, its return to warmth and many cloud shapes let it be a reminder: There will be cloudy days but still the blue sky remains. Stable.  Open. Unchanged.Your practice is not to chase away the clouds but to trust your blue sky. Let the clouds come. Let them change. Let them pass.
