What Is YOUR Heart Speaking?

February. Valentine’s Day. Hearts.
February tends to make us all think of the heart, not just as a symbol, but also as a feeling. The feeling we have for those in our lives, romantic and platonic, as well as the love we feel from others and the self.
Last year, I came across research suggesting that the human heart can be felt up to three feet beyond the physical body. The heart emits vibrations—an energetic field—that extends outward and can be sensed by those we come into contact with. This idea made me slow and think: What vibrations am I sending out through the authentic whispers of my own heart? And equally important—what am I unconsciously feeling from the hearts of others?
It raises an interesting question. When I feel anxious, unsettled, or at ease around someone, is it always my own emotion? Or could I be sensing the vibrations of their heart? Perhaps some of what we experience in relationship—spoken or unspoken—is an energetic exchange happening beneath conscious awareness.
When we dive deeper into this mastery of the heart and its role in connection, research shows that hearts can actually synchronize when people spend time together in shared experiences. Listening to the same music. Breathing in similar rhythms. Moving together in patterned ways.
This is where yoga becomes especially powerful.
Through music, chanting, pranayama, and asana, yoga creates an environment where individuals begin to attune to one another. Breath softens. Movement becomes rhythmic. The nervous system settles. The heart opens. Strangers—often unknowingly—begin to sync in unison, creating a collective vibration that feels calming, grounding, and deeply nourishing. It’s a shared experience that doesn’t end when we roll up our mats, but carries beyond the four walls and into our daily lives.
This concept is echoed in the work of HeartMath, which explores the heart as both a physical and intuitive center of intelligence. Science has shown that the heart communicates with the brain and body on multiple levels. Neurologically, the heart sends signals to the brain that influence emotional processing and decision-making. Biochemically, it releases hormones that help regulate stress responses. Electrically and energetically, the heart generates a measurable electromagnetic field—one that extends beyond the body and interacts with the space around us.
What HeartMath teaches is that we can learn to listen to this intelligence. We can use heart-focused awareness to regulate emotions, calm the mind, and make decisions that feel aligned rather than reactive. When the heart leads, the mind often follows with greater clarity and ease.
February invites us to return to the heart—not only in romantic love, but in self-awareness, community, and connection. On the mat and off the mat, we practice more than poses. We can practice listening with the heart. We can practice feeling first with the heart. Moving in sync, flourishing, emitting and connection with such power becoming the truest form of love we can cultivate.
