What is Yin Yoga?
Yin Yoga slows down the yoga flow into fewer movements, each held for a longer period of time. In a Yin class, you may hold each pose for anywhere from 45 seconds to 5 minutes, depending on the class and your experience level.
Benefits of Yin Yoga
Yin holds a lot of the same benefits as other types of yoga. Additional benefits of Yin include better tissue and joint flexibility. This is because holding poses for an extended period of time allows your stretch to reach deeper connective tissues and restore elasticity. Finding your breath and breathing into each pose’s stretch is important to not only relaxation, but also connecting to muscles and deeper tissues.
Another benefit of Yin Yoga is reduced stress and anxiety, along with better sleep. Studies have shown that those who practice Yin Yoga regularly can reduce stress, anxiety, and even lower their risk of depression. These all lead to better sleep and a higher quality of life.
Who is Yin Yoga For?
Yin can be practiced by anyone looking to receive its benefits, keeping in mind that holding poses for a prolonged period of time is sometimes more difficult than holding poses in a vinyasa flow. Less experienced yogis may want to hold poses for a shorter period of time, increasing their time and comfortability in poses with more practice. Always listen to your body and what feels best to you.
