Disco Ball

Divine oneness, a philosophy thread that can be found winding its way throughout many ancient yoga texts, stories and sutras. Oneness states that human beings may appear to be different from one another, but in reality we are not. Within each of us there’s an assortment of nerves surrounded by blood, muscle, bone and skin. Within each of us we experience  happiness, sorrow, fear, anger, and joy. All facing trials, problems, while finding milestones with the ups of joy and celebrations of life. Though the adjective or noun that goes along with each of these experiences may be different when it comes to your neighbor, or those you may have never even met, we are all the same … all creations of a divine oneness.

If the divine is in all things, then all are one. Though the world appears to dance with diversity, in reality all people—and all living beings—are one. Every person, thought, and event is linked, and individual actions have a ripple effect on the whole. Recognizing this oneness fosters empathy, compassion, and a sense of unity. All parts of one body, working together in yoga (union).

This ancient yoga philosophy reminds me of the old school disco ball. Up close, the squares can be slightly different from one another while reflecting different colors, different patterns, different shapes, some even carrying shadows or darkness. Maybe there’s a chip or two on one of the tiny squares. However, when you flip the lights off, turn the disco ball on and stand back to watch it in all its glory, what seemed so different comes together in oneness. Lighting up a room with explosive colors, shapes, reflections and movement. An amazing sight of oneness. There all the time, just needed to be taken in from a different perspective.

Our differences aren’t to be hidden but to be celebrated. When we work in unity, find gratitude in another or empathy and compassion for those around us it’s that underlying oneness that shines. A spark that each of us came from and carry as an individual purpose, shining on others to allow their light to shine as well (i.e namaste). When we work towards shining our light on others while mirroring the grace and gratitude in those around us, the disco ball of humanity shines brightly.

How will you reflect today? What color will you allow to dance? Will you choose to shine brightly on others while seeing their light shine too?
